Apprenticeships and Traineeships
How to mentor a new trainee in your workplace?
Apprenticeships and traineeships are a fantastic way to start your career while gaining a nationally recognised qualification. Designed for entry-level positions, in most cases, as an apprentice or trainee you do not need prior work experience.

Prior to the Trainees first day

On the Trainees first day

  • Advise the apprentice what they should wear and if they need any work, health and safety gear
  • Tell them where to meet you and when, as well as who to report to when they arrive
  • Ask in advance if they need to provide you with any of their information for payroll
  • Ask them to bring any forms such as proof of citizenship or their driver's license if required
  • Communicate your expectations upfront, including around company rules and Work Health and Safety.
  • Welcome them to the team by introducing them and make sure they know who to go to if they need help.
  • Don't forget to give them positive feedback. There's a good chance they're feeling overwhelmed, so it's important to point out what they're doing right.
  • Understand that trainees may make mistakes as they develop their skills at work and training.

How to Supervise?

Provide Mentoring

  • Demonstrate tasks and explain how they need to be done
  • Help the trainee or apprentice improve, by watching them practice tasks and correcting mistakes
  • Monitor progress of training in relation to the training plan
  • Mentor the employee and help them feel comfortable in your organisation
  • Provide constructive feedback in relation to work and training goals
  • Training is a team effort between the employer and Venture Education. Asking your apprentice about how their training is going is a good way to check in on them and it can help you identify any gaps in their learning.
  • You can also keep in touch with Venture Education and check with trainers to see if the trainee needs more support.
  • As an employer, you are required to make sure that your trainee is attending training.
