Apprenticeships and traineeships are a fantastic way to start your career while gaining a nationally recognised qualification. Designed for entry-level positions, in most cases, as an apprentice or trainee you do not need prior work experience. While you’re learning the role and working towards the completion of your qualification, you will be earning a wage and have responsibilities within your job.
The duration of an apprenticeship or traineeship will often range from one to four years depending on the qualification, and employment status. An apprenticeship or traineeship is governed by a training contract, which is a legally binding agreement, between the apprentice or trainee and the employer, to work and train together for a length of time.
What is an Apprenticeship?
What is a Traineeship?
An apprenticeship usually takes four years to complete, during these four years the apprentice will undertake specific training for a skilled trade, and upon completion, they will have a nationally recognised qualification and become a qualified tradesperson; for example a hairdresser, an electrician, a mechanic, or a plumber.
A traineeship can take anywhere from approximately 12 months to three years to complete. During this time the trainee will undertake training in their vocational area, and upon successful completion, they will have a nationally recognised qualification in their vocational area; for example childcare, business administration, or tourism management.
